AUTERA – Shaping the Autonomous Era

Lightning-fast data logging and prototyping with extensive, hot-swappable storage

AUTERA is a dSPACE product family designed for data-driven development in the area of autonomous driving and driver assistance. Its core member is the AUTERA AutoBox – a modular robust in-vehicle data logging and prototyping system with excellent performance. It can read, process, and record raw data from lidar, radar, and camera sensors as well as automotive buses and networks with best-in-class bandwidth.

Application Areas

AUTERA is a product family dedicated to the development of applications for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving (AD). It can be used to log extensive data volumes during test drives for homologation, replaying data at a later stage, or training neural networks, etc. Therefore, it features a high-performance storage solution, the AUTERA Data Storage Unit (AUTERA DSU), in combination with a high-volume AUTERA Solid State Disk (AUTERA SSD). For convenient and high-speed data upload a dedicated AUTERA Upload Station will be available.

Furthermore, the AUTERA AutoBox can be equipped with powerful hardware accelerators, such as graphics processing units (GPUs) or field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), to develop, validate, and optimize sensor fusion and perception algorithms or neural networks.

Key Benefits

The special strength of the AUTERA hardware is its unique combination of high computation power and a wide data bandwidth (50 Gbit/s) in a compact form factor. It provides an accurate time stamp mechanism as well as comprehensive bus and network support based on the latest standards, such as AUTOSAR and Fibex. Moreover, it supports a wide range of camera interfaces, such as GMSL II, FPD Link III, and CSI II for different camera vendors. Its scalable and flexible setup lets you tailor the system to your requirements and keep up with changing demands in the dynamic environment of ADAS/AD developments. All this is provided in a chassis optimized for in-vehicle use with regards to temperature, robustness, and supply voltage – the AUTERA AutoBox. The system is delivered with a ready-to-use setup based on RTMaps. However, you can also choose your preferred software environment for the application based on a Linux operating system. An AUTERA Upload Station is available to upload the logged data to your existing server infrastructure as quickly as possible.

Unique Features

  • Support of different hardware accelerators, such as GPUs, e.g., NVIDIA® RTX A5000
  • Support for relevant automotive busses and networks: connect to (automotive) Ethernet, CAN FD, etc.
  • Support of RAW data interfaces for imaging sensors such as GMSL II, FPD-Link III, or CSI
  • Designed for in-vehicle use: compact, robust, car battery voltage supply, extended temperature range
  • Seamless integration: Can be combined with other systems, e.g., MicroAutoBox III or SCALEXIO AutoBox
  • Hot-swappable AUTERA SSD for easy memory exchange during a test drive
  • Scalability: Comfortably expandable to double bandwidth and storage space in one system by adding an additional AUTERA DSU

The Software Package for Data Logging and Rapid Prototyping

Graphical user interface RTMaps and AUTERA AutoBox.

Preparing, executing, and monitoring your application with multisensory software in RTMaps

RTMaps from Intempora, a dSPACE company, is a component-based software development and execution environment that allows users to time-stamp, record, synchronize, and play back data from various sensors and vehicle buses. With RTMaps' intuitive graphical user interface, you can easily drag and drop I/O interfaces (e.g., for visual sensors, filters, and other building blocks) from comprehensive libraries to define inputs, outputs, and data processing steps in your application. While running, RTMaps captures and records data from different sensor types and protocols (camera, lidar, radar, automotive buses) with high-precision time-stamping. This ensures that all data is time-correlated and can be used in a synchronized manner in all processing steps and when replaying data. To ensure economic efficiency in fleet applications, RTMaps is available as a cost-effective runtime version. In addition to RTMaps, the Linux-based AUTERA system can be used to operate open-source programming software like ROS.

Configuration of bus interfaces with the Bus Manager.

Bus Configuration for Quick Vehicle Integration

When you integrate AUTERA into a vehicle, it can interface directly with the vehicle’s bus and network infrastructure to capture or process messages from other devices. To ensure optimal use, the Bus Manager makes it possible to configure the bus interfaces by also supporting relevant standards such as AUTOSAR for the communication matrix.

Mark relevant situations while recording with RTag.

Tagging While Logging

RTag is a live manual tagging software application that runs on tablets or notebooks. With RTag, it is easy to manually annotate driving situations with customized tags. Thanks to RTag, you can easily mark encountered situations such as roadworks, temporary speed limit, crossroads and overtaking with a variety of configurable tags and also monitor and control the sensor stream recordings. Using tags makes it easy to find relevant situations more quickly among the large data volumes.
