ドイツのInstitut für Automatisierung und Informatik Wernigerode（Institute of Automation and Informatics、IAI）は、数年にわたってハルツ大学と共に燃焼エンジンの吸排気バルブを操作するリニアアクチュエータの実用化について研究を行ってきました。この研究の結果、機械式可変バルブ駆動装置と電気機械式バルブ駆動装置のそれぞれの長所を兼ね備えた電気モーター式バルブ駆動装置が誕生しました。研究室での試験にはdSPACEのプロトタイピングシステムが使用されました。
