Highly flexible testing of charging communication for all common charging standards around the world, to achieve efficient validation of EV charging components
What is the dSPACE Smart Charging Solution?
The dSPACE Smart Charging Solution is a comprehensive set of tools to simulate, develop, test, and validate software and hardware for charging components. These can be charging components of electric vehicles (EVs) or charging stations, also referred to as electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE). The solution also supports developers of Megawatt Charging Systems (MCS) for commercial vehicles, agriculture, aviation, and shipping with comprehensive testing options and dynamic models.
The test and validation solution focuses on charging communication, but can easily be extended to validate all ECUs involved in the charging process, including:
- Battery management systems
- Onboard chargers
- Energy management ECUs for EVs
- Home energy management for EVSEs
Our global customers use the individual tools of our solution to perform software-in-the-loop (SIL) tests, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tests, and real-vehicle tests.

Key Benefits of the dSPACE Smart Charging Solution
Our Smart Charging Solution helps you identify potential issues early in the development process, significantly reducing development times and costs. dSPACE recommends SIL, HIL, and full-system validations for the development and validation of smart charging technologies.
Software-in-the-loop (SIL) testing enables testing and validation in a simulated environment to verify functionality and performance in a non-real-time system. It allows for early detection of software issues, easily supports test pipelines for continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD), and enables agile development.
Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing involves testing real hardware components within a simulated environment. This allows for testing the physical components of the technologies under test without needing a fully operational system. HIL validation increases test coverage, shortens validation times, and enables modular development processes.
Full-system testing is enabled by emulating the charging station (for EV tests) or the EV (for EVSE tests). This creates dynamic test scenarios that allow for thorough validation of performance and reliability. Full-system validation can provide more accurate results than conventional HIL testing. It covers fault conditions, grid disturbances, and different charging modes. In addition, it includes all ECUs and power components involved in a real charging process.

Special Feature: Battery Data Exchange Protocol Support
The Battery Data Exchange Protocol is a standard for smart charging communication, introduced by the Korea Environment Corporation to further enhance EV charging safety.
As batteries age, monitoring their condition becomes increasingly important. To support this, the ISO 15118-based battery data exchange via value-added service (VAS) adds an extra layer of communication between the EV and the charging station in South Korea. This enables the continuous transmission of key battery parameters, such as state of charge (SOC), state of health (SOH), and temperature. In South Korea, this information is forwarded to a central authority and, in specific cases, can be used to detect potential risks early and take appropriate action.
This additional mechanism complements the battery management system and helps to:
- Enhance overall EV safety
- Reduce risks related to battery conditions
- Support proactive fault detection and response
- Improve safety standards for EV charging infrastructure
The dSPACE Wireshark® plug-in now visualizes Battery Data Exchange Protocol communication via VAS during testing, enabling detailed analysis and validation of this safety-relevant feature.
The Smart Charging Solution supports the initiation of battery data exchange via ISO 15118-2 and acts as the communication counterpart to receive the data sent by the vehicle.
Hardware
DS5366 Smart Charging Interface
The hardware component of the Smart Charging Solution comes as an interface unit between the hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulator and the electronic control unit (ECU).
It provides a CAN FD interface for connecting to the HIL simulator as well as a USB interface for data logging and an Ethernet interface for protocol tracing.
DS5367 Smart Charging Plug Simulator
For a comprehensive set of fault insertion options, the DS5367 Smart Charging Plug Simulator can be added to the Smart Charging Solution. It supports all common charging standards.
The extension lets you emulate and manipulate the electrical networks related to connectors, cables, and communication signals and fulfills the CharIN CCS Test System (CCTS) recommendation.
For testing charging stations, the DS5367 Smart Charging Plug Simulator is mandatory.

Smart Charging Interface Software
The basic software component of the Smart Charging Solution includes a Simulink® model, ControlDesk layouts, and a DBC file that describes the CAN FD communication.
The Simulink model supports all common charging communication standards, such as ISO 15118, DIN SPEC 70121, CHAdeMO, ChaoJi-2, and GB/T. It includes a user interface for parametrization and allows for the connection and simulation of power electronics components.
By using the ControlDesk layouts, you gain an overview of all the relevant electrical information, the messages involved in the charging communication, and the communication status. You can also use the layout for configuration purposes, for example, for parametrization as well as electrical and timing manipulation.
Smart Charging PlugAndCharge Software Module
The Smart Charging PlugAndCharge Software Module lets you test advanced features as described in the ISO 15118-2 charging communication standard, including plug-and-charge (PnC) and value-added services (VAS).
These features require TLS encryption and certificate handling, which are both supported by the dSPACE test solution. For certificate handling, dSPACE offers a customizable, ready-to-use dSPACE public key infrastructure (PKI) and supports working with the non-productive PKI from Hubject.
