Connection to a PROFIBUS network

With the PROFIBUS interface, you can connect a dSPACE system to PROFIBUS (PROcess Field BUS) networks to develop controller technologies for factory automation, decentralized peripherals, motion control, etc.

Application Areas

Processing closed-loop and open-loop control information for machinery and systems with the aid of powerful microchips is widespread in modern automation technology. As a rule, the processors are connected by one or more communication networks. The PROFIBUS interface connects PHS-based dSPACE Simulators and dSPACE proto­typing systems to PROFIBUS networks to develop controller technologies for factory automation, decentralized peripherals, and motion control, for example.

Key Benefits

The PROFIBUS Interface is equipped with the PHS++ bus interface and can therefore communicate with the dSPACE PHS hardware at very high speeds. The maximum possible baud rate for PROFIBUS communication is 12 Mbaud. A sample setup with a ControlDesk experiment is included in the interface to explain the basic implementation of dSPACE PHS hardware in PROFIBUS environments.


PROFIBUS is a vendor-independent, open field bus standard for a wide range of applications in manufacturing and process automation. Vendor independence and openness are ensured by the international standards IEC 61158 and IEC 61784. PROFIBUS allows communication between devices from different manufacturers without any special interface adjustment. PROFIBUS can be used for both time-critical high-speed applications and complex communication tasks. It utilizes a nonpowered two-wire (RS485) network and can have up to 126 nodes.
