Wenn wir atmen wollen, atmen wir. Normalerweise. Wie allerdings weiß ein künstliches Beatmungssystem, wann der Patient wie viel Luft braucht? Mechanische Eingriffe sind für den Patienten beschwerlich, und um die Unannehmlichkeiten auf ein Minimum zu reduzieren, muss die Maschine so früh wie möglich auf den Atmungseinsatz des Patienten reagieren.
