FAQ 560: Ethernet – Ethernet Monitoring with ConfigurationDesk

Question

How do you set up Ethernet monitoring using the Ethernet switch block from ConfigurationDesk?

Solution

Ethernet Monitoring

  1. Using the preconfigured Ethernet switch configurations for SCALEXIO and MicroAutoBox III

These configuration modes consist of predefined settings for the Ethernet switch. These configuration modes define how the Ethernet ports and internal controllers are connected to each other and how data streams can be used internally.

These preconfigured Ethernet switch configurations can be selected from the SCALEXIO / MicroAutoBox III web interface.

  1. Using the I/O software:

The Ethernet Switch function block lets you configure the switching of Ethernet traffic and allows you to enable and specify the monitoring of Ethernet traffic. Detailed information about the Ethernet Switch block can be found on dSPACE Help:
ConfigurationDesk → Working with ConfigurationDesk → I/O Function Implementation Guide → Ethernet → Ethernet Switch → Introduction (Ethernet Switch) → Introduction to the Function Block (Ethernet Switch).

An Ethernet Switch switches Ethernet traffic between the controllers and the Ethernet switch ports.

Component /Term Description
Ethernet switch port Electrical interface of the Ethernet switch port.
Controller Controls the access to the Ethernet network and is part of the data link layer.

Ethernet traffic of each Ethernet switch port can be monitored. For an Ethernet switch the following modes are selectable:

  1. No monitoring: Deactivates the monitoring of Ethernet traffic
  2. Egress monitoring: Only Ethernet frames that are forwarded by an Ethernet switch port can be monitored.
  3. Ingress monitoring: Only Ethernet frames that are received from an Ethernet switch port can be monitored
  4. Egress and Ingress monitoring: The complete Ethernet traffic can be monitored

Example Configuration of an Ethernet Switch

Step 1: Setting the destination port

First, select the necessary monitoring mode. The monitoring mode can be set to Egress monitoring, Ingress monitoring, or Egress and Ingress monitoring. Specify the destination port. In the figure above, both egress and ingress traffic are being monitored using Port 5 as the destination port.

Note: A destination port itself cannot be monitored. This port should not be a part of a configured Ethernet controller port of an Ethernet configuration, as the entire Ethernet traffic would be forwarded to this port again. As a result, the inspection port would inspect all data twice.

Step 2: Selecting the Ethernet switch ports to be monitored

After enabling the monitoring mode of Ethernet traffic, specify the monitoring mode for each Ethernet switch port with the Monitoring source mode property.

As can be seen in the images above. Port 1 and Port 2 have been configured for Egress and Ingress monitoring i.e., all traffic on these ports can now be monitored on Port 5 which was set up as the destination port in Step 1.
