Both suppliers and OEMs have been using automated testing on a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulator to enhance the productivity and efficiency of ECU validation. As well as testing the actual functionality of the ECU under test, HIL simulators also reveal scheduling and performance problems, I/O errors, bus errors, energy management errors, incompatible hardware and software versions, and errors in diagnostic functions. HIL simulation is well established in the automotive industry, where it is used in numerous applications. For example, HIL simulators are successfully used for testing ECUs for climate control, body electronics, engines and transmissions, and also for vehicle dynamics control.
