Formula Student Opens Driverless Competition in 2017

dSPACE trains future race engineers in using multisensor software

With 28 participants from 14 teams, dSPACE in Paderborn once again hosted a large group of young Formula Student developers in late February and early March. They participated in a two-day training course to become familiar with the company’s development tools.

As more and more academic teams are eager to also compete in the recently introduced Formula Student Driverless competitions with autonomous race cars, this year’s training was the first to include a two-hour presentation on the RTMaps software. In this multisensor development environment, the students can conveniently and efficiently capture, synchronize and process data from their race cars, which can be equipped with a broad range of environment sensors, from cameras and radar sensors to laser scanners and satellite navigation.

But the traditional disciplines of Formula Student were addressed as well. The participants took part in several hands-on workshops, e.g., on intuitive measurement data acquisition and analysis with the dSPACE experiment and visualization software ControlDesk®, and on rapid control prototyping with dSPACE MicroAutoBox® II.

With the hardware and software tools that the racing teams can use free of charge, dSPACE helps the future engineers develop and test their open and closed loop controls more efficiently. This way, they can continuously advance their conventionally or electrically propelled race cars for racing success. In the 2016/2017 season, 35 academic racing teams benefited from this cooperation, which traditionally includes training sessions. By getting involved in Formula Student, dSPACE is already thinking about tomorrow's need for skilled workers, helping young researchers get their ideas on the road early on.

About Formula Student

Formula Student is an engineering design competition in which international teams of students plan and build their own race car to compete on internationally known race tracks. But building a fast formula race car is not the only goal of this competition. Design, financial planning and sales arguments also contribute to the success of the teams, which are evaluated by a jury of experts.
