Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation is regarded as the tried-and-tested method for function, component, integration and network tests for an entire system, especially for model-based design. It has been an integral part of numerous companies’ development processes for years. Users have continuously streamlined their development processes, and the requirements for HIL testing are therefore also changing. This paper addresses the changing requirements for the openness of HIL systems, and how these changes need to be addressed by a new HIL technology. In particular, the resulting requirements for hardware and software interfaces are discussed.
