Challenges

Steering systems are usually very complex, which means that they require highly dynamic mechatronic test benches for extensive testing.

Apart from the accelerator and brake pedals, the steering wheel is one of the most important control elements in a vehicle. In addition to the classic front-axle steering, which is supported by an electric motor in today’s vehicles, innovative concepts such as rear-axle steering or complete steer-by-wire steering systems are increasingly being developed.

The most common steering concept today is front-axle electric power steering (EPS), which involves an electric motor to support the driver during steering. Steer-by-wire steering systems, however, do not have a mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the steered wheels. The system components are connected by electrical means only, which means that a traditional (mechanical) steering column is no longer required. Regardless of the actual concept, all steering systems have one thing in common: An electronic control unit (ECU) is needed to manage the interaction between the various mechanical, electrical, and electronic components, which makes the systems highly complex. To ensure that the steering systems are operated safely, they must pass numerous tests before being introduced to the market. In very early development stages, software-in-the-loop (SIL) testing helps to test new functions, such as lane keeping or automatic parking, and the control algorithms of the electric motor itself. As a next step, the related ECU can be stressed in every conceivable situation during hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing at the signal level. These tests do not require a real motor or real power electronic components. However, when it comes to testing the real power electronics, our dSPACE power HIL systems come into play. These systems supply real currents and real voltages to emulate the real motor. To achieve full test coverage, all real parts, including the motor or the complete steering mechanics, must be added to the test setup. Finally, dynamic mechatronic test benches are required to complete the tests. Using these test benches, you can apply mechanical load torques or forces even to those parts of the real system that are physically incorporated into the test setup.
