Today’s vehicles and aircraft are highly interconnected mechatronic systems with a high number of electronic control units (ECU). In today’s vehicles, 100 million lines of code for an entire ECU network are already a reality in many places, and the complexity for electrics/electronics (E/E) functions in the vehicles and aircraft is continuing to grow due to factors such as driver assistance systems. The challenges on validation and test systems to validate this complexity are also increasing.

Test System Integration

To test mechatronic systems as efficiently as possible, it makes sense to use all types of simulation-supported test methods at the same time, i.e., to combine PC-based functional tests with HIL tests and tests on real-time-based test benches. The development process then benefits from the advantages of all of these methods.

The test methods need to be implemented reliably and integrated seamlessly so they can run in parallel to the OEM’s and supplier’s current development projects. For this, not only technical but also organizational requirements have to be met. These requirements have to cover new technical systems (bus systems, simulation models) as well as standards and norms (ISO 26262, DO-178B and DO-178C, IEC 61508).

ISO 26262 for HIL Simulation

dSPACE offers comprehensive advice and support for setting up a HIL test system according to ISO 26262 requirements. Additionally, the use of ISO-26262-certified tools such as AutomationDesk reduces the efforts for making test processes ISO-26262-compliant.  

Process-Reliable Tool Chain

For process-reliable test environments, dSPACE offers not only appropriate test systems, but also software that meets current safety standards. The test automation software AutomationDesk has been certified by TÜV SÜD for testing safety-related systems according to ISO 26262 and IEC 61508. This certificate confirms that this software tool is suitable for developing and testing safety-relevant systems in the automobile industry, commercial vehicles, aerospace and many other fields. AutomationDesk is the first test automation software in the area of HIL simulation to be granted such a certificate.

Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI)

dSPACE supports the open Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI) standard with its PC-based simulation platform VEOS, its hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation system SCALEXIO®, its production code generator TargetLink®, and the data management software SYNECT®. As an open standard, the Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI) simplifies the use of best-in-class tools for specific modeling tasks and the consistent reuse of models. 

ASAM XIL API – Generic Simulator Interface

The ASAM XIL API standard is the next generation of the ASAM HIL API standard. The XIL Model Access port (MAPort) supports test bench access at all stages of the function development process: MIL (model-in-the-loop), SIL (software-in-the-loop), PIL (processor-in-the-loop) and HIL (hardware-in-the-loop) simulation. Today, a wide range of dSPACE products support the ASAM XIL API standard.

Data and Workflow Management

To ensure efficiency, traceability and reproducibility throughout this long and often heterogeneous process, a central data and workflow management is just as important as test systems that work together seamlessly. Centralized data and workflow management builds on automated test runs and test setups. Users must be able to configure test systems flexibly, without continuous additional effort. Workflow management relieves the testers of recurring tasks. Centralized data management lays the foundation for managing the test configurations and the test results so that data can be managed consistently throughout the entire test process.


SYNECT is a data management and collaboration software tool with a special focus on model-based development and ECU testing. It helps you handle models, signals, parameters, tests, test results, etc., as well as their dependencies, versions and variants, and the underlying requirements throughout the entire development process. The open API lets you integrate SYNECT in existing IT infrastructures and workflows.
