dSPACE Run-Time Version License Check

In a nutshell: New runtime version license check on dSPACE real-time systems

Runtime version licenses (RTV, aka. “execution license”) have been required to execute ASM or XSG models on any simulation platform (e.g., SCALEXIO, MicroAutoBox, VEOS, …) for many years.

With dSPACE Release 2024-B, introduced technical measures to check these runtime version licenses on real-time systems (see section 'Hardware' below).

Initially, there will only be a compliance check that informs you about required, available, and missing runtime version licenses without any effect on the execution of the real-time application.
After a transition phase, it will no longer be possible to run a real-time application without the required runtime version licenses. So please make sure that you have all required licenses.

With dSPACE Release 2024-B, a new license container variant called “dSPACE Activation Container (Embedded)” was introduced, allowing you to activate runtime version licenses onto the dSPACE real-time platform. (See Technical Information (How to)).

A corresponding license compliance check for Floating Network Licenses (FNL) is introduced with dSPACE Release 2025-B.

Note

dSPACE tools will help you to check if the licenses required by the application are available on the simulation platform or via FNL server.
Below find videos showing the handling of these tools.

Technical information (How to)

If you already own runtime version licenses as “USB” variant, you need to perform the following steps if you intend to run an application on a dSPACE real-time platform:

  1. Create a “dSPACE Activation Container (Embedded)” on the dSPACE real-time system using dSPACE Installation Manager. This step is only necessary if the dSPACE real-time system does not contain such a license container yet.
  2. Update and transfer the required runtime version licenses from your USB dongle to the “dSPACE Activation Container (Embedded)” on the target real-time system. During the mentioned “update”, the license will receive a new variant allowing the activation on the embedded CmContainer. The license first needs to be deactivated (removed from the USB dongle) and activated (added to the real-time system) using dSPACE Installation Manager. The process is very much the same as moving a license from one dongle to another.
  3. If you want to use the same runtime version license also on a dSPACE offline simulation platform (VEOS), it needs to be available on a USB dongle again attached to the PC running the model. An alternative to allow for a more convenient handling could be the use of an FNL license.

In case you wish to use a FNL server the following steps need to be performed:

  1. Update the runtime version licenses using the dSPACE Installation Manager. During this update, the licenses will receive the additional option to borrow them to a dSPACE real-time system.
  2. Add the IPv4 address of the FNL server into the server search list in the dSPACE real-time systems web interface. More information on this step can be obtained in the section “Defining the Server Search List on dSPACE License Clients“ in the  “Working with CodeMeter Licensing Technology” guide.
