Fault Simulation

Every system in a vehicle must undergo thorough testing to ensure its reliability. This applies to the software for the ECUs (electronic control units) as well as the wiring and sensors and actuators.

If an error, such as broken wires and short circuits, occur on the electrical level, the ECU must react accordingly. To test this, fault simulation comes into play.

Types of Electrical Failures that can be simulated

  • Open circuit to simulate a broken wire or loose contact
  • Short circuit
    • To ground (KL31)
    • To power switch channels with battery voltage (KL15, KL30)
    • Between channels (Pin-to-pin)
    • Pulsed switching to simulate “loose contacts or relay contact bouncing”
    • Load or signal disconnection
  • Switching multiple electrical failures
