What is ASM Drivetrain Basic?

ASM Drivetrain Basic provides real-time simulation models for longitudinal vehicle dynamics, including the calculation of driving resistances and the complete drivetrain behavior. The library enables realistic modeling of various transmission types, clutches, and differentials, supporting both manual and automatic transmission systems. In addition, ASM Drivetrain Basic includes an advanced dual-clutch transmission (DCT) demonstrator designed for the validation of sophisticated DCT control systems. The simulation covers the interaction between mechanical and hydraulic components of a DCT. Depending on the transmission shaft speeds, the control unit preselects the most probable next gear by actuating hydraulic valves that move mechanically synchronized elements. Once the shaft speeds reach the required range, the next gear is engaged and the control system performs a smooth torque transfer between both output shafts through coordinated clutch actuation, enabling highly realistic gear-shift behavior.

Typical Application Areas

  • Simulation of vehicle longitudinal dynamics in combination with ASM Engine
  • Hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing for transmission and drivetrain ECUs
  • Testing of dual-clutch transmission (DCT) systems including hydraulic and mechanical interactions
  • Integration testing of complete powertrain systems

Longitudinal Driving Characteristics

Longitudinal driving simulation is commonly used in powertrain control units test scenarios to follow a given reference velocity. Vehicle resistances, such as slope and aerodynamics, as well as driver capabilities, such as pedal actuation and gear shifting, must be modeled. Depending on whether vehicle velocity is defined as a reference signal or gears and/or pedal positions are provided as stimulus signals, several use cases for the driver must be taken into account in the simulation. Each operation mode has to be simulated as realistically as possible to also account for efficiency analysis and test bench applications like engine-in-the-loop or drivetrain-in-the-loop scenarios. Preview capabilities on the required vehicle speed improve the velocity tracking performance. Furthermore, situations such as engine startup/stall, gear skipping (e.g., in truck applications), and adaptable clutch actuation behavior during gear shifting are just a few examples of highly flexible longitudinal driver implementation.
