This paper describes modeling guidelines for a model-based development process, taking as an example a tool chain based on MATLAB®/Simulink®/Stateflow® for function development and TargetLink for production code generation. Modeling guidelines play an essential role in ensuring a seamless development process and reduce the amount of rework that a model has to undergo in all phases of the development cycle. Furthermore, guidelines help to accomplish quality goals with regard to the development process, the efficiency of the generated code, and safety concerns, for which examples are given in this paper.
