High Quality … Or In Other Words ‘Being Proud’

It seems everyone in today’s market is praising their high-quality products, but what does this actually mean? Is it a matter of great functionality? The fastest processor or the most features? Or is it simply people taking pride in what they are designing, building and delivering − because that ensures all the best ingredients for success.

I recently got the chance to participate in a product presentation where the product manager showed his company’s new product to a bigger audience. You could read in his face that it was a moment of pride for him showing his new product that for sure uses the best components available, looks great and has lots and lots of features. You can be sure he would not have been in front of all these people like this if he knew that it wasn’t a high-quality product.

But how do you get something to be proud of?

Choosing the right ingredients is probably one of the fundamental things. Starting with the wrong foundation might cause the whole construct to fall apart at the end, no matter how hard you try. Therefore, it is sometimes unavoidable to spend a few dollars more, but it is worth it in the end.

Choosing the right people to get you the quality you want for your product is easier said than done. It takes a team, a group of people who are collectively eager to create the best product and may deliver an even better product at the end because they want to be proud of what they deliver. In today’s marketplace, everyone is looking for highly-qualified people. This is a challenge each organization is facing. The pace of technology and complexity is raising fast that training and keeping personnel skills matched to the rising system complexity.

One is often under the pressure of price, timing and customer demand, but once you start to give in and sacrifice the quality for one of the above, the goal of the high-quality product becomes out of reach.  It is much harder and much more expensive to try and make up for it later.

Think about it for a second. Would you rather believe someone who tells you “we have the highest quality product” or “we are so proud of our product, we let it speak for itself.”

In the past few weeks, I was asked to present our quality processes. After I started crafting presentations, I decided to take a different route and deleted them. Instead, I gave our new customers a tour through our labs and let them experience how proud we all are about our products here at dSPACE. The new customers were able to experience the enthusiasm, the attention to detail, the well-defined quality process, and see the pride in every individuals eye about the quality of work they are doing to deliver the high-quality products that dSPACE is known for.

We believe in making no compromise when it comes to quality. dSPACE Inc. has even taken the extra step of establishing a quality management system (QMS) that is certified to the international standard ISO 9001: 2008. Our QMS includes documented procedures and processes that cover the entire operations − from marketing, sales, design, manufacturing and support for products and services − in the field of embedded software and mechatronics development and testing tools.

For me, it comes down to this. If you can be really proud of what you have done, it is a high-quality product because nobody would be proud of something that will fail or break in a short amount of time.

We are proud of the work we are doing at dSPACE to deliver the highest quality products no matter how small or large the project. It is evident in the success our customers are having with our products where they can simply focus on their applications knowing that they have the best tools of trade at their disposal.
